A horse operator who is being sued over a parade tragedy caused by a pair of runaway horses has denied he was negligent in his actions.
Mardell Steines of Spragueville, Iowa, who lost his wife in the accident during the Fourth of July Heritage Days parade in Bellevue, Iowa, filed his response to the lawsuit in Jackson County.

An Ignacio man plowed into a horse Monday night while driving on Colorado Highway 172, south of Ignacio.
The crash occurred about 10:35 p.m. near milepost 4, about four miles north of the Colorado-New Mexico line.
Stony Wilson, 44, was driving a 1998 Jeep Cherokee toward Ignacio when he struck a horse standing in the middle of the road, said Trooper Rusty Sanchez, with the Colorado State Patrol.

Reno, NV – News 4 has discovered internal Bureau of Land Management documents that show the government agency was considering euthanizing large numbers of wild horses as recently as last year.
The documents include a number of pages detailing how a possible euthanization program could be implemented, even how the horses could be killed.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Two Salem teenagers are facing multiple charges after they allegedly ripped a horse statue from its footings at the Saratoga Spa State Park over the weekend, police said.
Officials say the teenagers, whose names were withheld because they are eligible for youthful offender status, knocked the horse off its base on Saturday night and that several people witnessed the act.

Horse and Rider: Who Leads?

When you think about it, an 800 – 1500 lb animal allowing a 50 – 250 lb person to get on its back and ride is pretty amazing. The horse can easily dislodge anyone from its back, but the majority don’t. Why?
Well, it has to do with the horse’s social nature. The horse is used to being in a herd. And a herd can be as small as 2. Of those 2, one will always be the leader. And it’s not always the stronger or the bigger. It is always to the smarter of the two or smarter one of the many.

Jean occasionally gives riding lessons in her arena and at shows. One day her school horse spooked and threw a student.
Ray and his wife board a few horses for other people. Ray’s stallion bit one of the boarders, injuring her severely.
Stan has several customers who haul their horses to his barn for shoeing. One of the customers, while helping out, got kicked and suffered paralyzing injuries.

In an effort to get a hold of its wild horse population, the state of Nevada’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing more horse gatherings. The BLM has proposed gathering a number of mares and injecting them with birth control, while removing others from the herd.

We’re used to see them in our cars and trucks, and in a number of motorcycles. However, now we have them coming to the equine world. No, we’re not talking about padding our horses, or even ourselves. But rather, a vest worn by the rider. Although the idea of the air bag vest is being adopted from the motorcyclist world, it’s developing a good number of followers who give it credit for saving their lives.
